BURSARIES FOR NURSES
PLUNKET TRAINING (New Zealand Press Association/ WELLINGTON, January 31 The award of bursaries to registered nurses taking a course of Plunket training was announced this evening by the Minister of Health (Mr J. T. Watts). The bursaries, which will begin with the April course, will be at the rate of £215 a year for a 17-week period, with a grant of £lO towards the cost of a uniform. They will be awarded through the Department of Health. The Minister said that bursaries would be awarded on condition that the bursars agreed to serve for two years in child welfare work with either the Plunket Society, the Department of Health or a hospital board. In the case oi a hospital board service would be given in a maternity ward, a children’s ward, or in a district position where a Plunket certificate was necessary. The nurse vrould be required to serve for at least one year in the first position to which she was appointed at the termination of her trailing. Advice had been received from the Plunket Society that a limited number of vacancies only would be available. Application forms could be obtained from district offices of the Department of Health and from Plunket rooms throughout the Dominion. Mr Watts said. These forms should be sent direct to the nursing adviser to the society at 453 George street, Dunedin. Mr Watts said that he believed the way to build a healthy nation was to start with the baby, and the granting of bursaries was a practical illustration of the Government’s long-standing interest in infant and maternal welfare.
