COLLAPSE OF OIL DERRICK
STRUCTURE ON BEACH AT NEW PLYMOUTH
CREW ESCAPE INJURY (New Zealand Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH,' January 31. Giving way about 30 feet from the ground, a 122 ft oil derrick on the Ngamotu Beach, New Plymouth, crashed late this afternoon and a twisted wreckage of girders and steel rope now lies in a clump of flax. The collapse occurred while a crew was working on the site, but the structure fell clear and no 'one was hurt. Stout timbers were flung a considerable distance.
A pull was being taken on a length of casing at the time of the mishap. The northern side of the steel framework gave way under the strain and the structure fell towards the sea. The derrick, which is the property of New Egmont Oil Wells, Ltd., is 20 years old. The manager of the company (Mr F. J. Dobson) said to-night that steps ‘ would be taken immediately to repair the damage and reerect the derrick.
