LAKE IN VOLCANO’S CRATER

BOAT TRIP PLANNED (New Zealand Press Association i WANGANUI, January 31. Bad weather yesterday upset plans made by Mr L. S. Vause, of Frankton, and a companion to launch a rubber dinghy on the lake in Mount Ruapehu’s crater 9000 feet above sea level. They planned to take samples of the lake’s warm, coloured water, test its varying temperatures, and plumb its depths. Vulcanologists at Rotorua were interested in the venture because the lake has formed only since the eruption of 1947. To make sure that their craft would not go to pieces in the lake, it was tested in Rotorua’s boiling pools. It withstood the chemical action and also the extreme heat.

When the pair were climbing Ruapehu yesterday, they met members of the Ruapehu Ski Club, who dissuaded them from climbing further because the weather was breaking.
