BOWLS AND THE EMPIRE GAMES

Sir,—With the imminence of the celebration of the fourth British Empire Games festival, imaginations will naturally by stimulated by visions of the sports arena, visions of athletic young bodies, of superb co-ordination between well-trained minds and finely developed, rippling muscles, of tingling nerves, straining in the high pitch of close and keen competition. Now where in this mental picture is the place for that venerable game of bowls? I am in no position to question the wisdom of so auspicious a body as the British Empire Games Federation. However, I think this question is legitimate. By which of its merits was the inclusion of lawn bowls “among the seven basic sports of the Emnire Games” made possible? —Yours, etc., • ■ K. M. SEARLE. January 31. 1950.
