ENGLISH PARK
ADDITIONAL EXPENDITURE OF £5OOO For further work, including permanent lighting, at English Park an additional sum of £5OOO will be placed on this year’s estimates by the City Council “If work such as the English Park job is delayed much longer, no .guarantee can be given that such facilities will be in readiness when required for the centennial year,” reported the reserves committee. The Director of Reserves (Mr M. J. Barnett) reported that £3BlO was on the current year’s estimates for repairs to the stand, the construction of an embankment with seating accommodation, and the resurfacing of the cycling tracks. The embankment had been made and the work on the seating had been held up pending the council’s decision on further expenditure for extensions to the present covered stand, additional seating, alterations to the cycling track, dressing sheds connected with the sewer, and general improvements to the grounds. As practically all the work would be repairs and additions, it would be rather unwarranted to prepare plans for what might rightly be termed “bits and pieces.” “The committee is most anxious that the work which can be proceeded with immediately should be put in hand and completed so that both the works and reserves departments may be relieved of at least some of the burdens which they will be called upon to face later in the centennial year,” the reserves committee reported.
