Mr J. T. Watts has resigned from the Canterbury University College Council because of his appointment as Minister of Health.. Nominations for a new Parliamentary representative will close on February 13 and an election will be held on March 6. Mr Watts will be thanked for his work on the council. Sir Arthur Sims, a graduate and benefactor of Canterbury University College, will be congratulated on his knighthood by the college council. The president of the New Zealand Trotting Conference (Mr A. L. Matson) is in Lewisham Hospital recovering from an operation. Mr W. F. Young, district engineer,' Ministry of Works. Christchurch, will leave for Westport to-day on official business. He will return to Christchurch to-morrow.

Mr A. Aubrey, of Melbourne, chairman and managing director of the Southern Cross Assurance Company, Ltd., will arrive in Christchurch this morning in the course of a business tour of New Zealand.

Dr. J. C. Bradshaw’s death was noted with regret by the Canterbury University College Council yesterday afternoon. Appreciation of his services to the college as lecturer in music from 1902 to 1936 and professor of music from 1937 to 1941 were recorded. Dr. T. O. Garland, director of the industrial hygiene division of the Department of Health, will arrive in Christchurch this morning on an official visit.

Mr J. W. Huggins (chief city inspector) will attend the annual meeting and conference of the Health and Sanitary Inspectors’ Institute and of the Royal Sanitary Institute at Hamilton from February 20 to February 24. Messrs T. H. Lawn (president), F. C. Penfold (past-president), and R. T. •Alston (secretary), of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, will leave for Wellington this evening to attend a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation. To-morrow the council will make a courtesy call on the Prime Minister (Mr Holland), and discussions will be held with the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr C. M. Bowden). Mr J. A. Johnstone has been appointed acting-director of the Canterbury University College School of Art during the absence abroad ;of Mr C. Lovell-Smith.
