TROTTING

TYPHONIC SOLD FOR 610 GUINEAS

Typhonic, the winner of the first division of the Hon. Mark Fagan Memorial Handicap at the Reeftcn Trotting Club’s meeting on December 3, brought the top price of 610 guineas at the auction sale on Friday of the horses taken to Sydney by the Belfast trainer, C. S. Donald. Several lots did not reach the reserve price. These will be taken to Melbourne and offered at auction during the InterDominion Championship meeting next month.

Sales on Friday included:—Brood mare, Margate, 350 guineas, Mrs Mary (Leeton); four-year-old chestnut horse by Red Shadow—Margate, 370 guineas, J. D. Watts (Sydney); bay mare. Jack Potts—Ednamite, 250 guineas, C. C. McCarthy; bay horse, Jack Potts—Ablaze, 425 guineas, V. Barker; filly. Gamble—Bertha Volo, 320 guineas, R. Speckham; chestnut gelding, Jack Potts—Dillon Squared, 360 guineas, W. Townshend; brown filly, Jack Potts — Zipalong, 380 guineas, J. Human; chestnut colt, Superior Rank—Dell June, 150 guineas, A. J. Lofberg; brown horse. Administrator, 475 guineas, S. Randall; Ruth de Oro, 510 guineas, R. Fitzpatrick; Castigate, 520 nuineas, A. J. Lofberg. Passings included Gamble at 525 guineas, a colt by Gamble from Marlene at 625 guineas, and a seven-year-old mare by Lusty Volo—Reno at 425 guineas.

Horses sold on behalf of Mr W. L. Parkinson (Christchurch) - were: Double Scotch, 550 guineas, Mr James Caffyn; Limerick Pride, 375 guineas, E. L. McDonald; Herald, 175 guineas. Loyal Chief was passed at 275 guineas, and Maalesh at 130 guineas.

Rebandicap The following rehandicap has been declared for the Hororata Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday:—Selwyn Handicap Trot: Scottish Greetings, 36. Won Five Races

Flight Commander, Roydon Derby, and Highland Kilt, which were all successful at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s jubilee meeting, are trained at Roydon Ixidge by G. B. Noble for Sir John McKenzie. Highland Kilt, which showed much ability last season, when he lowered the mile record for two-year-old trotters to 2min 19 l-ssec, was seen at his best when he won the Stewards’ Handicap from Sure Strike on Saturday. A brother to the champion pacer, Highland Fling, Highland Kilt is one of the most promising young trotters in training. The three-year-old Flight Commander, which has appeared unlucky in some of the classics and semi-classics, won a division of the Trial Handicap and a division of the Renwick Handicap. A showy son of Light Brigade and Airflow, Flight Commander appears to have bright prosPC Roydon Derby won two divisions at the meeting. Roydon Derby, which was bred by G. B. Noble, is a mare by U. Scott from White Globe, an Australian-bred mare by Globe Derby from Lee White, by Fairfield from Nutwood Maid, by Huon Junior from Lady Nutwood.

May Rare Well A . . Casameter will have her first start at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting in the Waverley Handicap, in which she is well placed on the 12 yards mark. If she has been improved by her race in the Waimate Handicap at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on January 14, she should be placed.

Won at Blenheim True Friend, the winner of the second division of the Ward Handicap at Blenheim on Monday, is a four-year-old gelding by Ringtrue from Fernbrock Lass (4min 23 3-ssec), which is alg> the dam of Fernbrook Jack, Blonde Sailor, and Ferndale.

May Win at Nelson The promising trotter, Calamity Jane, which was placed at Blenheim on Monday, may top off her list of minor Pj ac " ings with a win at the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday.

Just Lasted . . __ Although he had a lead of about 20 lengths with seven furlongs to go, Falamai just lasted long enough to win the Hamilton Handicap at Claudelands on Saturday by half a length from the favourite. Tantamount, which was always in second place. of two mistakes, finished third just ahead of On Guard, which showed some ability once he settled down. cFalamai, which is trained by E. Smith for Mr G. Easton, is an aged gelding by a successful sire of trotters in Swordsman from Heather Glow.

By Light Brigade Vivid Night opened up a big gap on the field in the second division of the Fairfield Handicap at Claudelands on Saturday, but he weakened and was beaten with three furlongs to go. Brilliant Light led into the straight, but she was no match for Greek Brigade over the concluding stages. A promising filly, Greek Brigade, which is trained at Te Awamutu by E. N. Kennerley for Mr N. Trigg, is by Light Brigade from Marina, which left a winner at the trotting gait in Indian Wilkes to Indianapolis. Racing Solidly True Comrade, which paid £lO9 14s 6d when she won the President’s Handicap at the Westport Trotting Club’s meeting on December 27, was allowed to pay £39 Ils 6d when she won the Pelorus Handicap at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Bred by R. J. Kerr in 1942, True Comrade showed much speed in the early part of her career, but she was erratic and, after gaining one minor placing for Mr R. Kennedy when trained by O. Quinlan in the 1947-48 season, she was mated with Great News> to whom she produced an attractive foal. The experience has quietened True Comrade, whidh is racing particularly well for G. Alexander, who is now training her at Tai Tapu. A Logan Fraser mare. True Comrade is out of Margaret Grattan, by Grattan Loyal from Letitia, by Lord Elmo from Fatality, by Electioneer from Accident, by Monte Cristo.

Won Well , A Badminton, which gained her last win when trained by the late S. Hands at' the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting on September 11, 1948, pleased by her performance to win the first division of the Wairau Handicap at the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, and the Hillersden Handicap on Monday. Now trained by J. Vivian for Mr G. Rutherford, Badminton is a six-year-old mare by Gold Bar from Malapert, by Quite Sure from Logan’s Pet, by Logan Pointer from Stanley’s Child, by Stanley from a Highlander mare. Encouraging Although he had no chance with Victory Song and Hemisphere, True Dillon gave an encouraging display to finish third in the Electric Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. A six-year-old son of Dillon Hall and True Tone, True Dillon would not need to show much improvement to win a race for Mr G. R. McNeill, who trains him at Invercargill. A Lilcely Type Monty Jason, the winner of the first division of the Trial Handicap at the Marlborough Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday, is a promising three-year-old colt from L. O. Thomas’s Addington team. A massive youngster, Monty Jason is by Dillon Hall from Gayola (2min 48 sec), by Adioo Guy from Lydia, by Wrack from Gianella, by Quincey from Queen V, by Kentucky.
