INCREASE OF 224,000 IN FORTNIGHT

(Rec. 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 21. The total number of unemployed in Western Germany increased- by 224,673 in the first fortnight of 1950, and on January 15 was 1,783,142. Unemployment has increased by almost 300 per cent, since West Germany’s currency reform in June, 1948, and has more than doubled in a year. West Germany pays about £8,300,000 a month in dole money.
