TWO MEN ASSAULT TAXI DRIVER
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 22. A taxi-driver was assaulted and robbed of £4 in takings by two men in Green Lane to-day. The thieves escaped through a nearby property and have not yet been arrested. The driver Raymond Tane, oi Avondale, picked up two fares who wanted to go to a house m .Green Lane just before 6 o’clock in the morning. He drove slowly, looking for the house number. The men stopped him suddenly and one man, sitting beside him in the front seat, paid the fare. As the driver was counting out the change the man in the front of the cab aimed a blow at him while his companion m the bacK leaned over the seat to try and pin the driver down. Tane was scratched on the face and arm by one of the men but he managed to shake them off ’ However, one of the assailants grabbed his purse from his hand. According to Tane the men then ran down the drive of a h ° u ®e and escaped through a rear gate. Although shaken by the assault. Tane drove to the nearest cab rank and rang the police. .
