SECOND DAY AT AUCKLAND

RACING

VIGILANTIA wins SUMMER CUP

gXG*S PLATE TO LORD MOSS “TM Press Special Service AUCKLAND, December 28. rtriUntia scored a decisive victory from, sTare and Balmacara in the Summer ■ B o ® the principal event on the second • J’nf the Auckland Racing Club’s sum-, rnpptinc at Ellerslie to-day. He was I I ®S r i ridden by G. F. Hughes, who also I the King’s Plate on Lord Moss. ! SShes had three winning rides on the ' Sv and so tar is the leading horseof’ the meeting, with five wins. Tnrd Moss had an end-to-end victory in the King’s Plate, in which King Fin--5.9n and Rizzio filled the minor places. Alter a very uneven start, the three-vpar-old Good Century, finished strongly , n defeat a useful field of sprinters in the Electric Handicap. Good Century was fiiirri to Mere Ana and Nionyx in the sns Plate on the first day. *The best dividends for a win were ciJnv Duke (£l2 14s 6d) and Good Cen«rv (£3 15s). and for a place Flying nfficer (£9 Os 6d). Sleepy Duke and Good fentury were both ridden by M. Martinovich, who won the Auckland Cup on Swanee on Monday. The weather was cloudy and warm, and *he course was fast. The attendance was IS 000 The totalisator handled 185,870 IDs compared with £149,144 on the second day last year, an increase of £36,726 ite The turnover for the first two days was £508.210, compared with £454,460 last ve ar an increase of £53,750. J A good start was made in the Summer Cup and Hunting Rua went to the front eariy from Oklahoma, Lady Finis, Rossijr’e Angeline, Balmacara. Faultina, Lord Bevel, Vigilantia, and Fifth Note. Passing the half-mile. Hunting Rua was still ■gating the pace, closely followed by Oklahoma, Lady Finis and Rosslare, with n>ni Revel. Balmacara. Faultina, Gollen, .Angeline, and Vigilantia next. On the home turn Lady Finis dashed into a lead of several lengths, and was first into the straight from Oklahoma, Rosslare, Hunting Rua, Balmacara. and Lord Revel, with Vigilantia also coming into the picture. Rosslare and Vigilantia overtook Lady Finis just inside the last furlong, and Vigilantia maintained his run in great style, going on to win attractively by two lengths from Rosslare. Balmacara ran on fairlv well to be a neck away third, and Fifth Note was a close fourth, succeeded by Ladv Finis, Faultina, Marcher, Quick jfarch. Hunting Rua, and Gollen. It was Vigilantia’s second win in succession. and he has developed into a good handicap horse. The way he defeated his opponents at the finish indicated that he is likely to carry his winning record further. He ran the mile and a quarter in 2min 5 l-ssec, which was only a fifth of a second outside the race record, which fc held conjointly by Orelio and Round Up. Balmacara again ran creditably, being handily placed throughout. Fifth Note was closer at the finish than at any other stage. The top-weight, Lord Revel, was in a handy position to the turn and was unable to make any impression at the end. Lady Finis made a very sharp dash into a clear lead at the home turn, but tired quickly in the last furlong. She might have done better if she had started her run a little later. Uneven Start in Plate The King’s Plate was marred by an uneven start, Lord Moss getting out on the move, whereas Rizzio and Tudor Prince lost some lengths. Lord Moss went out to make a fast pace just in front of Swayup and King Finchall, with Rizzio going at a great rate to make up ground. The first half mile was run in 48sec, and by that time Rizzio had run up to second place about four lengths behind Lord Moss, with? Swayup third and King Finchall a few lengths away. Nearing the turn. Lord Moss increased his lead to about six lengths from Rizzio, who was joined by King Finchall and Swayup. Inside the last furlong, Lord Moss appeared to be tiring a little, but he had the race in hand and went on to win by a length and a half from King .Finchall, who challenged resolutely under the urging of his rider. Rizzio tired to be six lengths away, third, and Swayup was fourth. The time, Imin 35 3-ssec, was only two-fifths of a second outside the course and New Zealand record, which is held conjointly by Sleepy Fox and Tauloch, winners of the King’s Plate in 1946 and 1948.

Although he appeared to be tiring towards the end. Lord Moss put up a vepr good performance, and scored decisively. King Finchall again demonstrated that he is a very courageous colt. Rizno ran the first half mile at a great pace and it. was not surprising that he could not maintain the effort. The rider of Tudor Prince, L. J. Ellis, told the stewards after the race that his mount straddled one of the starting stalls when the start was made. As a result Tudor Prince lost his chance and just strode along behind the field.
