FORM AT EPSOM

TROTTING

VEDETTE’S EASY WIN Vedette, which is trained at West Melton by J. D. Litten for Mr C. Johnston, brought his record to ■ three wins, two seconds, a third, and a fourth in his seven starts since he began racing this season when he outclassed the field over the concluding stages after trailing Windrush for most of the way in the North Island Challenge Stakes at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting at Epsom on Tuesday. Gold Change gave a good display to finish second to Vedette after almost falling with' six furlongs to go. The Temple-ton-traijied Soangetaha finished on nicely in third place, just ahead of Windrush. Leading Reinsman

M. Holmes, who drove Vedette, was also successful with Two Step. Loyal Flier, and Sahara jQueen. Holmes now heads the winning Norsemen’s list with 30 wins. R. Young is second, with 15, and E. N. Kennerley third with 10. Holmes was unlucky in the St. Heliers Handicap with Chamfer, which* finished close up third to Jack Peterson and Mandrake, after being checked at a critical stage of the race. Chamfer may win a race on the second day of the meeting to-day. Globe Direct, which was driven by Holmes in the Auckland Trotting Cup, lost about 24 yards when he failed to begin correctly. A winner at New Brighton recently. Globe Direct may soon atone for this mistake.

Returning to Form > Mandrake showed that he is returning to his best form when he finished fast to get within a nose of Jack Peterson in the St. Heliers Handicap. An aged son of Dillon Hall and Fortunate, Mandrake, which is trained at Templeton by C. R. Berkett for Mr W. E. Stickings, may win a race at the meeting. A Good Effort

Driven by V. Alborn, who trains him at Addington, Dundee Sandy finished fast in second place to Captain Sandy in the Auckland Trotting Cup. Dundee Sandy, which is now back to nis best form, may add to his record to-day. As he has several horses engaged at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, Alborn will not stay for the third day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting. Broke Twice

Although he lost ground when he broke twice. Loyal Flier finished on well to win the £lOOO Association Handicap from the favourite, Cyone Man. Ixiyal Lass set the pae> from the start, and when the field settled down she was followed by Belworth, First Scott, and Cyone Man. After beginning fairly well. Loyal Flier broke before half a mile had been covered. Once he settled jlown. Loyal Flier soon made up his lost ground, but he broke again with a mile to .go. When he was piroperly balanced, M. Holmes sent him after the leaders, and he trotted solidly to follow Loyal Lass, First Scott, and Cyone Man into the straight. With a well-sustained finishing run. Loyal Flier got up to win by half a length from Cyone Man. The second favourite. Single Task, disappointed her admirers when she finished a place. If she hes been improved by the race. Single Task, which has been nominated for the trotters’ section of the Inter-Dominion Championships at Melbourne in February, may win a race at the meeting. A Rough Race The Akarana Handicap w-as a rough race. Nearly half the field had theii by interference within t J terlonc, Scott Wrack broke and checked several horses, including the Th V n°n U pLVo D ? le and Goldsmith. Two Step justified his support when he won the Selby Handicap, after giving a splendid exhibition of trotting. Two Step began smartly to take the lead, but M. Holmes steadied him, and he settled down to trail Neonapolis and Concord, with Harmonist also handily placed. These four raced in close formation until three furlongs from home, where Gay Belwin moved up to be handy. Holmes then took Two Step into the lead, and he carried on to win by a length from Neonapolis, with Harmonist in third place.
