PRESIDENT AND POPE

CHRISTMAS' MESSAGES EXCHANGED CHALLENGE TO MANKIND IN SEARCH OF PEACE . WASHINGTON; December 23. President Truman and the Pope agreed in an exchange of Christmas messages that the greatest Christian challenge facing mankind to-day was the search for a just and lasting peace. Mr Truman said that man was making progress along the Divine road laid out by the Saviour “in spite of the vicissitudes oftentimes encountered.” He added: "The proof is found in man’s growing effort to lighten the suffering of his fellows. “To bring a just, enduring peace among the nations is the great task that beckons ahead and calls for rededicatiop.” In reply, the Pope welcomed assurances that the United States would continue to work for peace, but said that real salvation would not come until man realised that “all men are children of the one Father Who is in Heaven.” Only on these foundations, he said, could a truly lasting peace be built.
