COMMUNISTS IN CHINA
PREDICTION OF U.S. ATTITUDE
(Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Dec. 23 Senator Elbert Thomas (Democrat, Utah), a’ prominent member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told the press to-day that the United States would ultimately recognise the Communist Government of China He said: “The universality of control by the Communists is already there.” The United States State Department said to-day that the Chinese Nationalist Government would be permitted to buy arms in the United States if it could pay for them. The department’s statement followed newspaper reports that an export licence to ship 100 000 Springfield rifles to the Nationalist Government had been refused. The department said that the licence had been refused for several reasons of procedure, and because the potential exporter had received only an inquiry, and not a firm order from the Nationalist Government.
