ROWING

TIMARU REGATTA AVON AND UNION HAVE FOUR WINS From Our Own Reporter TIMARU, Dec. 26. The Avon and Union Rowing Club’s crews, with four wins each, were the most successful in the fourth annual Timaru regatta, rowed on the Timaru harbour today. A stiff northerly breeze made the water choppy for rowing, but conditions improved towards the end of the programme. Both Cure (Kaiapoi) and Avon No. Il swamped before the start of the first race. Avon later emptied out and rowed into second place. The mile course, which was to start outside the moles, was reduced to half a mile because of the rough water, and after the first event was reduced further to one-third of a mile to take advantage of the calmer water within the harbour. There were ’72 entries and eight clubs competed. There was a good attendance of spectators. Cure had their first regatta win for a number of years. Plywood boats gained the first four placings in the youths’ fours event. Union now lead with .75 points for the D.C.L. Cup, for the most points gained in Canterbury regattas during the season, and Avon are second with 72. Results were:— Novice Double Sculls.—North End (D. Carse. W. Elliott) 1: Avon No. 22: Avon No. 1 3. Light-weight Maiden Fours.—Cure (N. Eder, B. Hullan. R. Jury, N. Price) 1; Oamaru 2; Timaru 3. Junior Double Sculls.—Union (N. West. G.
