NORTH BEACH GALA

PROFITS FOR SURF CLUB’S WORK Hundreds of holidaymakers attended the opening of the North Beach Surf Club’s gala at Thomson Park, North Beach, yesterday afternoon. In the absence of the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) the carnival was officially opened by Cr. G. D. Griffiths, who commended to the public support of the good work that the club was doing for the residents of Christchurch as a whole.

Profits from the gala, which will run for a week, are to be used to purchase life-saving gear, and possibly to extend as well as maintain the club house. Cr. Griffiths was introduced by Mr F. R. Price, chairman of the gala committee.

Dozens of children took part in sand modelling competitions held on the beach yesterday morning. Early in the afternoon an aeroplane from Harewood circled over the carnival area dropping 1006 “lucky” tickets, each entitling the finder to a prize. The aeroplane gave an aerobatic demonstration and a height judging competition was combined with this operation. During the afternoon the first of three heats for the “surf queen” bathing beauty contest were also decided. The final of the contest will be held next Monday. In addition to a variety of stalls and games, a miniature railway train is located in the park. A magician’s performance was also given to entertain the crowds, the first of several programmes to be nresented during the week.

BIG ATTENDANCE AT WAIKUKU The attendance at the Waikuku Beach Improvements Association’s gala at Waikuku yesterday was estimated at about 10,000. The total tak*ings for the day were about #6OO, which was on a par with the previous best efforts. Pleasant, mild weather favoured the gala in the afternoon, though earlier there was a rather boisterous wind. In addition to a number of stalls and side-shows, a programme of competitions and athletic events was organised. Results were:— Baby Show.—Girl under nine months: Susan Dickson 1, Sandra Milne 2. Girl under 18 months: Glennis Hunter 1, Sandra Norman 2. Boy under nine months: Hamish Rennie 1, Gary Barnes 2. Boy under 18 months: Graeme Smith 1, Allan Hawkins 2.
