MATHEMATICS IN FARMING

“ GREAT HELP TO N.Z. FARMERS” (New Zeeland Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 23. Switching from atomic to mathematical specialisation because he thought that there was more direct application for the latter in New Zealand, Dr. R. M. Williams, who arrived from England to-day by the Akaroa to take up duties in the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, believes that mathematics can be of the greatest help to New Zealand farmers. Until 1945. Dr. Williams was working on atomic projects in the United States and later was engaged in mathematical research at Cambridge University. He said that atomic isotopes in medical and agricultural fields could be of great value in tracing diseases and nutritional problems connected with farming. In normal agricultural matters, he said, mathematics could greatly reduce the cost of experiments.
