INCREASED VACANCIES FOR MEN At the end of November there were nearly 23 unfilled jobs for every 1000 men m work, according to the monthly review of employment issued by the National Employment Service. Vacancies totalled 21,962, and the number of unemployed was 53, including one woman. In reversal of the earlier trend notified, vacancies for men increased by more than 2000 from September to the end of last month. Vacancies for women, however, remained almost static over the same period. The increase is spread fairly evenly over all branches of industry, says the review. Seasonable industries record a proportionately greater demand for labour, mainly shearers, dairy factories, and freezing works staffs, and the demand for labour in the building and construction industry remains strong. On the whole, male vacancies have remained on a high level since 1947. though an over-all downward trend is in evidence.
