RECORD SPENDING IN AUSTRALIA
SYDNEY SHOPS BUSY (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, December 20. This year’s Australian Christmas spending is a record. In the first two weeks of December the banknote issue rose by £4,000,000. bringing the total note issue to £223,563,000 — £23.000,000 more tljan last year. Sydney retail stores estimate that their December turnover will be about £45,000,000 —10 per cent, more than last year. People are buying more utility articles than before and buyers are beginning to insist on quality for their money.
Among luxury items selling quickly this week were French perfume at £lB 5s a small bottle, walking dolls at £2l, watches at £3O to £4O. Many customers are financing their purchases by cash orders and time payment.
The main problem at the Sydney General Post Office is to decide what to do with the thousands of letters addressed to “Father Christmas” and the many badly-packed parcels., some of them without any address. Broken and insufficiently addressed parcels are generally applied for. a post office official said, and nearly all are eventually returned to the owners during the year.
