WINGATO TRIALS

GOLD KING RETURNS BEST TIME “The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN. December 22 Sound trials over six furlongs by Gold Kl ”g. Arctotis, Royal Sal, Maunga Reka, and Beau Sc-ir, and a bout over seven furlongs by three of C. C. McCarthy’s team, were a feature of the semi-final trials at Wingatui this morning. The course proper was open, with trestles about 70ft out from the rails, and the going was fast. There was a strong northerly wind blowing down the back straight. H. A. Anaerton did not work any of his team, restricting them to road work.

Gold King went away from the six-fur-long post, and after taking 24 4-ssec for the first two furlongs he came home in Imin 18 4-ssec, the best of the morning, but he only had a light-weight on his back. Arctotis was going easily alongside Royal Sal at the end of six furlongs in Imin 19sec. Both horses were being eased short of the post. Arctotis is right back to his best form.

The novice, Maunga Reka, and Beau Soir were together at the end of six furlongs in Imin 19 2-ssec, and they did it well. They went fast over the first stretch, the first three showing 37sec. Maunga Reka should do well against the maidens on Monday. Green Lake and Royal Boru went over the same' distance on the sand in Imin 20sec, the first three in 41 l-ssec and the last half in 51 3-ssec, Royal Scrip was shading Trench Fray, with Helio two lengths- away, at the end of severi furlongs in Imin. 34 2-ssed, the first half in 50 4-ssec and the last in 56 2-ssee. All were under a good hold, although Helio did not appreciate the hard track conditions after taking 53 2-ssec for the first half.

Royal Princess was under a good hold to complete the seven in Imin 37sec. She was finishing on in fine style. Bonny Chase broke away about six lengths clear of Speedy at the seven, and after taking 52sec for the first half, completed the journey in Imin 38sec, with Bonny Chase three lengths clear. Speedy was under a good hold, and she promises to run a solid race in the Dunedin Cup. Dazzling Night, the four-year-old sister to Bobby Dazzler, took 51 2-ssec for the first four of seven furlongs, but she was stopping badly over the last bit, taking Imin 41sec for the full distance. Addition and Young Yvette sprinted over the first three of six furlongs in 40 3-ssec. and they were restrained over the last bit to take Imin 27sec for the full distance. Both look in splendid order. Kosher and All Hurry were hard held to take Imin 51sec for a mile on the sand, the first five taking Imin 7 2-ssec and the last half 56 2-ssec. Kosher will start in the President’s Handicap, and not the Berwick Handicap. Jamell, who had the worst of the weights, was ahead of Fine Night at the end of a similar task in Imin 52 4-ssec, the last half in 56 3-ssec. Western Front went over a mile and a quarter in 2min 15 3-ssec, and revelled in his task. He took Imin 7 2-ssec for the first five, Imin 33 3-ssec for the first seven, and did the last half in 54 3-ssec. He is a likely candidate for the cup on his recent track work. Royal Scandal and Gallimaufry galloped over five furlongs on the sand. After taking 24sec for the first two furlongs, they completed their task in Imin 3 3-ssec, the last half in. 50 4-ssec, with Gallimaufry doing it out in front. Good Service required Imin 5 3-ssec for a similar task, the last three in 38 3-ssec. Gay Fenian took Imin 6 2-ssec for the same distance, and he did it well. His last three required 41sec. Lecturer and Royal Venture were on terms at the end of an easy five in Imin lOsec. Their last half took 56sec. Knight Crusader and Friar Phillip were given pace work, and they were speeded up. Knight Crusader should not be long in returning to his best hurdle form. The best time over four furlongs was credited to Brutus and Blood Royal, two candidates for the Champagne Stakes. It was a poor run, as Brutus went away five lengths clear at the start. Brutus took 13sec for the first furlong and completed his task three lengths clear of Blood Royal in 52 3-ssec. Victory Star and Rising Glory took 53 2-ssec for the half-mile after taking 12 2-ssec for the first furlong. Philip Laing took 55 4-ssec for the first four for seven furlongs, and he was then eased up? He looks well, but the class in the Publicans’ Handicap may be too rich for him. Royal Simper was going easily beside Buttons and Bows at the end of four furlongs, the last three' in 42 2-ssec.

Three unnamed three-year-olds from A. E. Didham's stables took 43sec for three furlongs, and they were working well within themselves. Roygbiv went away quietly from the mile post and he was speeded up to come home from the three in 43 2-ssec. Gold Song and Encounter gave a dashing display over four flights of the schooling hurdles, and the latter looks a good hurdle prospect for later in the season. Royal Tower was let off with a sprint down the straight, while Western Winner went ©ver two rounds at a slow canter.
