U.S. MEDAL OF MERIT
PRESENTATION TO REV. A. W. SILVESTER The Press’ Special Jiennc* AUCKLAND, Dec. 22. The United States .Medal of Merit was presented this week to the Rev. A. W. Silvester, of the Methodist Foreign Mission, by the Amencan Consul in Auckland, Mr M. A. Colebrook. The citation accompanying the medal states that the award was made because of Mr Silvester’s outstanding ’ ! services at Vella Lavella. in the Soloj mon Islands, during 1943. “His invaluable assistance.” the cita- : tion continues, “enabled the American armed forces to obtain an advance [ i position in enemy territory, and nw knowledge of the terrain dnd natives ■ ; gained the respect of the American , officers in charge of operations in tne i Solomons. In addition to these r ' i ; vices, Mr Silvester rescued 30 strannea ■ airmen and prevented their falling ! into enemy hands. He was also asso- > I ciated with the rescue of survivors oi _ the American cruiser Helena."
