SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN ANTARCTIC

PARTY LEAVES HOBART FOR ADELIE LAND (Rec. 7 p.m.) HOBART, Dec. 21. The Antarctic exploration vessel Commandant Charcot left Hobart early to-day to take a party of scientists to Adelie Land. The Governor’ of Tasmania (Sir Hugh Binney) officially bade farewell to the crew.

The captain of the ship said that it was hoped to reach the scientists’ new base within seven days and that the ship should return to Hobart early in February. Weather reports from whalers operating near Adelie Land indicated favourable weather for the Commandant Charcot’s voyage, but the whalers had no information on the state of the ice. If conditions are favourable the crew will spend 20 days helping the scienr tific party to establish its base.
