MARKET GARDENS AT AUCKLAND

MR E. B. CHISHOLM’S COMMENT (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 25. Concern at the proposal of the Auckland Harbpur Board to take over the Roseburr, market gardening area in Avondale, Auckland, was expressed to-day in a statement issued by Mr E. B. Ghishnlm. president of the Dominion council of Commercial Gardeners’. Ltd. Mr Chisholm said the taking over of these lands, even if for essential purposes, should require further and deeper thought. Within the last few years more than 800 acres of firstclass market gardening land near to Auckland had been lost by the extension of that city, said the statement Wellington was faced with a similar problem with the loss of the Hutt Valley-and a steady decline of the available land in Otaki. “Therefore I issue this warning to all public bodies and State departments,” Mr Chisholm said. “If they continue to take over this type of land near our cities, time is fast approaching when our industry will be unable to fulfil its duties to the public, that is. to provide the most essential food we need, namely, fresh fruit and vegetables.”
