BOOKMAKER SENT TO GAOL

MAGISTRATE REFERS TO PREVIOUS CONVICTION

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. November 23. On' a charge of bookmaking, to which he pleaded guilty, Henry Thomas Read, aged 63, was to-day sent to prison for one month. He told Mr F. McCarthy,' S.M., that he was unable to follow his occupation as a butcher because of sickness and, rather than draw a pension, he started bookmaking. The police said that when Read’s home was searched he admitted operations over the last 10 months, stating that his average turnover was about £125 a week. In 1946 Read was fined for a gaming offence. “You are a second offender,” the Magistrate said. “For people like you who flagrantly disobey the law there must be only one punishment—imprisonment.”
