WOMEN’S TENNIS TITLES
N.S.W. CHAMPIONSHIPS TWO N.Z. PLAYERS IN GOOD * MATC,H (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 22. Misses E. G. Atwood and B. Potter (New Zealand) played one of the best women’s doubles matches in the New South Wales lawn tennis championships series to-day in spite of a loss to Mesdames Hopman and Newcombe. The solidity of the Australian pair and slight lapses on the part of the New Zealand players contributed to the defeat at 4-6. 9-7, 6-4. The Ndw Zealanders started confidently, with Miss Atwood hitting freely, and Miss Potter playing a net game to perfection. They kept Mrs Hopman running, but she was tireless and the best player of the match. Had she not played at her top there is no doubt that the New Zealanders would have won. The other New Zealand pairs were eliminated in the women’s doubles, but the visitors have entered a further round, the mixed doubles. * Miss E. Becroft. who continues to show fine form, is looked on as likely to win the junior girls singles. She is easily the most improved player of the New Zealand team.
