VIEWS OF MR K. J. HOLYOAKE REFERENCE TO ASSAULTS ON WOMEN Both the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, and the Minister of Works. Mr Semple, had been evasive at meetings in Wellington When they had been questioned about their views on capital punishment, said the DeputyLeader of the Opposition, Mr K. J. Holyoake, in an election address last evening. The women and girls of New Zealand were not getting the protection they were entitled to, said Mr Holyoake, discussing assaults on women. He instanced the case of a man with a previous record of assaults on women who had committed a murder overseas, been released in New Zealand after serving four-and-a-half years, and then four months’ later committed another assault on a girl. The National Party’s policy was clear. It would seek the best advice possible from criminologists and others, and introduce a bill which would reintroduce capital punishment in extreme cases only. It was a difficult matter, and voting on it would not be on party lines—although he himself was in favour of capital punishment for extreme cases. He was more concerned, however, with propel safeguards for women and girls from criminal assaults' which had been too common in New Zealand in recent years.

Two nominations, those of tyir Angus McLagan and Mr H. R. Lake, were received yesterday for the Riccarton seat. Mr McLagan’s nomination papers*were signed by Messrs M. C. R. Gillard and J. R.
