“TIME WASTED IN NORTH ISLAND” > J SHORT VISIT TO CHRISTCHURCH When he returned to Australia .he was going to recommend that if there i was another trip more time be spent in the South Island, in which they ( were more interested, said Mr D. C, I Cameron, deputy-leader of a party o! c 13 farmers from New South Wain < at present visiting Christchurch dur.' • ing a tour of New Zealand farming g areas. The visit was arranged by the New South Wales Agricultural Shew ’1 Societies’ council, which accepted an invitation from the New Zealand Agn- J cultural and Pastoral Association to • visit the Royal Agricultural Show at 1 Palmerston North. Seven of th* farmers are accompanied by their wives. < “As far as most of us are concerned we have wasted a lot of time,” fc 1 Cameron said, “We have spent II ( days in the North Island and only c two in the south. Most of us an graziers and wheatgrowers, and an * more interested in the pastoral ansi of the South Island than the dairying • areas of the North Island.” * He was particularly interested is the South Canterbury irrigati® 4 scheme, said Mr Cameron. He hin- * self lived ip an area served by the Beriquin irrigation scheme fed from the/Hume weir on the Murrey diver. Farmers in the scheme, which cover- r ed nearly 1.500,000 acres, were allow- i ed water at the rate of 8s an acrefoot. The scheme had been very so:, F cessful. Six years ago a lot of the farmers did not know why they wen p on their properties, now they were practically retired. Most of the members of the party 4 inspected farms in North Canterbury yesterday. *To-day they are to visit Canterbury Agricultural College. Lto-L . coin, and the Agronomy Division. ? They will leave for Wellington thij r evening.
