AMBERLEY SHOW

strong fat sheep ENTRY big display of SOUTHDOWNS rhe Amberley A. and P. Association its first Show’ m 1901, when entries railed 82, of which 51 were draught gzis and the rest light horses. On the association set a record by margin with 1467 entries ‘draught horses) for its 17th annual It was by all counts the most sucshow the association has ever held, must have been very gratifying to band of officials who set jut only a years ago to improve the fixture. £ e weather was ideal, and the gate comLrtablv a record. Almost since sheep began to appear .mong the entries—m 1918—the Amberley ixnw has been pre-eminent among Canfury shows for its displays of fat sheep Sd lambs. On Saturday this section was ‘gain the feature of the show, and it is Sfe to say that no show- anywhere in Zealand could have surpassed Satur-j-v’s entry either in numbers or in ovality. In one important respect Amberley has an advantage over some ascociations in holding its show just at the time when fat iambs should be at theif best. Saturday’s entry contained a "tail” it js true, but it was small, and the judge was faced with big and very even classes. The district has suffered as badlv as any with dry weather this spring, and some of the entries were showing signs of it but the general quality of most of the entry could not have been bettered anywhere. An indication of the strength of the competition was that there were entries from Ellesmere fatteners. A most interesting and valuable class was that for lambs drafted by a farmer or his employee. It was well filled, and pave evidence of considerable skill in matching pens of lambs. B The rest of the sheep classes were of a high standard, quite up to that of the best Canterbury shows other than the Metropolitan, and in several sections competition was widespread and keen E S Taylor sent forward all the Romnevs bat one. an excellent ram from T. d Gale which took the championship.’ Mr tor showed the champion ewe, and also took the two championships for English Leicesters. s The Corriedale classes have oeen building up steadily at Amberley, and now usually attract sheep from several of the leading breeders. Competition was good again on Saturday, and the toil sheen reached a very high standard. A j Blakely won both championships and’ the reserve ram championship, and a. M. and T. R.
