PROVINCIAL PASTURE COMPETITIONS
The standard of the 157 entries in the North Canterbury pasture competitions, which were judged recently, showed once again a steady improvement over that of previous years. It has been far from a good season for grass in the coastal districts, but among the placed pastures in the provincial competition were several from these districts. A good indication of the generally high standard of the entries is that in the Class 2 comoetition, only four points separated - the first four pastures. The following are the results of the provincial competitions:—Class 1 (land valued at under £8 an acre): G. Palmer (Amberley), 90 points, 1; E. H.. F. Rands (Springbank), 88 points, 2; W. F. Fleming (West Eyreton) and J. W. Streeter (Amberley), 85 points, 3 equal. Class 2 (land value £8 to £15): W. R. Oliver (Hororata), 93 points, 1; A. H. Baker (Waiau), 92 points, 2; G. Ferguson (Waiau), 91 points, 3; A. Brustad. (Waiau), 90 points. 4. Class 3 (land value over £15): A. E. Page (Cheviot), 92 points, 1: F. Bowron (Waiau), 90 noints, 2; J. E. H. McGrath (Oxford), 89 points, 3. The placings in the district competions will be available next week.
GORSE RAKING
A North Canterbury farmer who, with recollections of his earlier years still fresh in his mind, blesses the mechanical gorse-cutter as one of the foremost inventions of the age every time it comes on his property, has added another blessing to his string this week. He was looking forward with distaste to raking up the cuttings, from a mile and a half of hedge, and burning them, but found that he could have this job done mechanically, too. The rake, fitted to his transport contractor’s tractor, raked up the clippings in not much over three hours.
