GOLF
FIRST ROUND OF N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP
ALL SEEDED PLAYERS WIN
(New Zealand Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, November 4. There were no upsets in the first round of the New Zealand women's golf championships, played to-day at the Otatara links, but the quality of golf id many matches- more than satisfied those who had hoped to see the eclipse of champion or seeded players. The weather for most of the day was ideal, and the course was again perfect for championship golf. Although all the Australian visitors played golf which delighted the galleries, they did not dominate the scene as they had in the foursomes. The limelight was probably stolen by the young Auckland competitor, Miss Margaret Hughes, who forced the New Zealand champion, Mrs Jackson Ball, to play at her brilliant best to survive the first round.
All the Australians won with something to spare except Miss Betty Kernot, the manager of the team, who was eliminated by Miss P. Borthwick after an excellent game. Mrs Jacobson (Auckland) and Miss Vivian (Christchurch) compelled their Australian opponents. Misses J. E. Percy and B. Cheney respectively, to fight hard for their entry into the second round.
