GRADING OF TEAMS SUGGESTED

FIRST AND SECOND GRADE COMPETITIONS “We are the biggest elub in New Zealand and we feel that serious consideration should be given to the matters,” said Mr W. G. P. Cunningham, of the Elmwood Club, at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association last evening, when he moved a recommendation that the competitions committee should seriously consider grading entries in the first and second grade mixed competitions according to the standard of players. The motion was passed.

Mr Cuningham said that this year his club was only allowed to enter one team in the first grade mixed competition, although the club was sufficiently strong to enter four or five teams up to first grade standard. “We have 550 members, who provide one-eighth of the finance of the association, and feel that teams should be picked on performance.” he said.

Mr W. A. Clothier said that the association had more teams now than it could accommodate on the grounds, with entries of 100 teams from 32 clubs. “If

dubs are going to be allowed to put in as many teams as they like, we won’t have the grounds to accommodate them. Even the hard courts are filled every Saturday. We cannot do anything this year.” he added.
