GENERAL SMUTS DISMISSED
POST OF COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF GOVERNMENT DECISION IN SOUTH AFRICA JOHANNESBURG, October 14. The United Press says’ that General Smuts, the South African Opposition Leader, who has been Commander-in-Cnief of South Africa’s forces since 1940. to-day received a letter from the Minister of Defence iMr F. C. Erasmus • relieving him of his post. General Smuts revealed that the letter written in Afrikaans, was dated October 7. and signed by Mr Erasmus. The letter said: “I have the honour to inform you that the Governor-Gen-eral-in-Council has decided to terminate your appointment as Commander-in-Chief of the Union Defence Forces m the Field—notified in the Government Gazette in 1940.” General Smuts replied, also in Afrikaans. formally noting that the appointment had been ended. The letter from Mr Erasmus was lying in General Smuts's office at Pretoria when he returned this morning from a week's tour of the country. His secretary said that General Smuts “treated it in his usual dignified and Unruffled manner.”
