GERALDINE CUP TO PERIDOT
THE HOB WINS SPRINT The winner of the Teschemaker Handicap at Washdyke in his previous start, the improving Peridot recorded another solid ’ performance to win the Geraldine Cup at Orari on Saturday. He was always to the fore in the running, being the leader practically throughout, and he stayed on well to survive Lbvemorn’s final challenge by half a head, with Authentic one and a half lengths away third, clear of Falconbridge. Volomai and Falconbridge were slow away, and Frances, the first to show out, was steadied to allow Peridot to take over the role of pacemaker. Turning into the back Peridot was closely attended by Frances, Lovemorn, and Foxella, with Authentic, Volomai, Bright News and Falconbridge next. However, Frances began to drift, and with four furlongs to go Foxella shaded Peridot, with Falconbridge and Lovemorn next, clear of Bright News, Frances, Volomai, and Authentic.
Peridot had again assumed a clear command at the straight entrance, and with a furlong to run he held an advantage from Lovemorn, Authentic and Falconbridge, almost in line, with Frances next. Lovemorn finished strongly and just failed to overhaul the leader. Authentic was a fair third, with the tiring Falconbridge fourth, clear of Frances, Volomai and Bright News, with Foxella last. The winner is a good type of f°u r ~ year-old which should show to further advantage, but Frances disappointed. Thq? latter failed to hold her early position in the running, and did not finish on as w r ell as expected.
Class Galloper Sent out 4-4 in a field of six starters, The Hob returned to his best form to record an effortless win over six furlongs in the Squatters’ Handicap. He was not well served at the start and with four furlongs to run he was giving the leaders, Dress Rehearsal, Terminus and Theocritus, a good deal of ground. However, he gathered them in before straightening up for the rdn to the post and he cleared away to win by two lengths. The Hob impressed as being in a class well above his opposition. Cipher came with a belated run to cut DresS Rehearsal out of second place, and Bon Chale, last into the straight, was fourth ahead of the tired Theocritus and Terminus, which was last. Kiloney did not give a particularly good display of jumping in the Rangitata Hurdles, screwing at several of’ his fences, but he was not troubled to win by four lengths after leading throughout. Turf Topic was second, after having every chance in the running, and Trencherman, which risked several jumps, was third.
Big Dividend In winning the first division of the Ohapi Stakes, Addition returned her supporters a win dividend approaching £5O. She worked her way to the front before turning for home and won easily by the wide margin of six lengths from Barry and New Ruler.
Short of the post It appeared that Airshaft, also at long odds, would win the second division of the Ohapi Stakes, but Indiana finished resolutely to defeat her by a head. The winner was not particularly well placed in the early stages and his was a useful performance. First favourite on the win machine, All Serene was in front when the field settled down in the Raukapuka Handicap, and at no stage did she appear in danger of defeat, winning easily by four lengths from Beau Soir, Oronoko. Velveline, and Open Sky, which finished at intervals.
Morning Watch Fades Morning Watch took over the running in the Belfield Handicap soon after turning out of the back, and at the home turn she appeared to be galloping comfortably clear of her opposition. However, she stopped badly when the pressure was applied and Pacific Edition came away for a decisive win, while Redlo also stayed on better to beat Morning Watch by half a head for second place. Top Class was a poor fourth, with Indian Morn, Rockway and Finance doing the best of the remainder.
The weather was fine and the track was fast but dusty, particularly at the turn leaving the straight, where the majority of fields covering the longer distances were momentarily lost from view. The totalisator handled £23,572 10s, against £28.453 10s last year. Results:— RANGITATA HURDLES, of £200; one mile and five furlongs.—l, 1 P. Sheehan’s KILONEY by Kinnoull—Miss Artoney aged 10-6 E.
