GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS
(By Our Commercial Editor.) Trading Is slack in the small seeds market in North Canterbury at present. Limited trading in white clover Is passing with the United States. Merchants report that contract sowings of malting barley are up considerably on those of last year, but sowings of all varieties of peas are well down, probably by about 25 per cent. The accumulation of oats persists, and there is. too, a lot of feed barley in stock. No reports have been received in Cashel street of any export avenue having been opened up in response to the Government's suggestion that an endeavour be made to dispose of the oat surplus overseas. A pronouncement on the subject of the new season's price for wheat is expected before the end of the month. It is possible that a further shipment of Australian potatoes may be made to Dunedin. but arrangements have not been completed. The small seeds market generally continues firm, and interest in the majority of lines is maintained. Export inquiries are still »being received for chewings fescue, browntop, and crested dogstail, but the quantity of seed now available for overseas is distinctly limited. Values of these lines, if anything, showed further hardening during the week. Cocksfoot and Timothy are also in short supply and lines of good quality are readily saleable at prices that are much higher than normal. Montgomery red clover remains the Cinderella of the seed market this season.
