CRICKET

NEW PITCHES ON POLO GROUNDS USE ON SATURDAY POSSIBLE Cricket maybe played on new pitches prepared on the old polo ground at South Hagley Park next. Saturday. At a meeting last evening of the management committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association, Mr C. F. Collins, for the competitions committee, said that entries for the coming season were so heavy that it had been necessary to stand down the fourth grade B competition until the new pitches were available, but Mr D. A. Colville, for the grounds committee, said that his committee believed it would be possible to play on Saturday. Entries this season were 98. four more than last summer, and an increase of 28 on the 1945-46 season. Mr Collins said. Grounds were a recurring problem. There were only 45 pitches for 49 games, and Lor that reason ;t had been decided, reluctantly, that a new grade, fourth B. be stood down temporarily. The school grade, formerly fourth grade B, would new be fourth grade C. Experiments would lie made with a ituir.en pitch prepared by a Christ•hurch firm. Mr Colville said, but the revives department, he had learned that 'ay. had just received a permit for a water supplv for the old polo grounds. rJe thought they could scramble through . i the ground by carrying the water until the supply was available. Messrs C. G. Crawford and W. J. V. ■’-’amilt in were appointed selectors of the Canterbury teams for Labour Day matches. Messrs I. A. Baxter. W. O. Mappiebeck, and W. E. Manpiebeck were apointed Brabin Shield selectors for the season. Coaching of Schoolboys For the coaching sub-committee, Mr C. G. Crawford said that it had been suggested that schools be zoned for Saturday morning coaching this season. Coaching would fake place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. or later. The committee recommended less cricket drill and more open wicket practice, to encourage correct hitting on prepared pitches. Schools taking part would be asked to nominate their four most, promising players. He appealed to clubs to provide coaches for the scheme, which would begin on October 22. The Lancaster Park and East Christchurch Clubs, he said, were not keen on the scheme. Mr W. E. Mappiebeck said that the Lancaster Park Club was willing to conduct coaching nets for boys on two evenings a week. Last season the coaches had been let down by the boys themselves, and they were not keen to give their time on Saturdays again. Mr I. M. Willoughby said that boys attended the Lancaster Park net on the first two Saturdays last season, but there had been no coaches. Unfortunately, when on the third Saturday the boys did not attend. the coaches were there. It was no good going ahead with the scheme unless clubs were prepared to help. It was decided to write to clubs to ask for coaches. The North Canterbury Sub-Association suggested that the Australian match at Timaru should be against a combined minor sub-association team, and not against the South Canterbury Association. It wa.s decided to forward the letter to the New Zealand Cricket Council. DRAW FOR SATURDAY Following is the draw for the first round of matches on October 15 and 22: First Grade. —HSOB v.
