SERIES OF THEFTS William Crawford, aged 25, a labourer, pleaded guilty to charges tnat on September 25, at Rakaia he stole a wallet and £lO in money, the property of Colin Sidney Gardiner; that on September 30 at Christchurch he stole clothing and 12s 6d in money, of a total value of £lO 2s 6d, the property of Lawrence James Kenny; and that on October 1 at Christchurch he stole a pair of trousers and a sports coat, of a total value of £3, the property of Trevor Bruce Williams. Detective-Sergeant A. B. Tale said that the accused had been employed at hydroelectric works as a labourer. The thefts were a miserable series of offences against friends and people who had befriended him. said Detective-Sergeant Tate. At Rakaia he was given a bed for the night and taken to a local entertainment. He stole the wallet from the man with whom he was staying, look out the money and buried the wallet in the garden. The accused then came to Christchurch and stole clothing from a friend. He sold this clothing to a second-hand dealer. REMANDED FOR SENTENCE Graham Kenneth Bryant, aged 19, a Royal New Zealand Air Force trainee, pleaded guilty to a charge that on October 9 he stole a wallet, papers and £3 in money, the prooerty of Dudley Edward Eyes. Detective-Sergeant Tate said that the accused was stationed at Weedons. On Sunday he was in the Y.M.C.A. watching a game of cards when he saw a wallet lying on the floor. He picked it up and went outside, where he took the £3 and threw away the wallet. Bryant was remanded in custody until Friday, pending a report by the Probation Officer. SHIP DESERTER Robert Stevens, aged 22. a ship’s cook and labourer, nleaded guilty to a charge that on April 15 al Auckland he deserted the overseas ship Port Jackson. He was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour. FINED FOR DRUNKENNESS William Sutherland Campbel), aged 50, a war pensioner, pleaded guilty to a charge that on October 10 he was found drunk in Chester street, having been once previously convicted of a similar offence within the last six months. “He was before your Worship yesterday or. a similar charge. He had only a haltpenny on him when he was arrested." said Senior-Sergeant J. J. Kearns. Campbell was fined 20s, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. REFORMATIVE DETENTION Laurence Neville Garlick, aged 26, a painter, appeared for sentence on a charge, to which he had previously pleaded guilty, that he stole £5. the property of David Sanfuel Angus Weir. Tate) in a claim against Ivan James Soutter, a furniture manufacturer, that amount being claimed as moneys payable by way .of security and being in default. DAMAGES CLAIMED The Para Rubber Company. Ltd. (Mr P. H. T. Alpers), claimed £76 16s 8d from Robert Walker, a* labourer, for damage to a motor-car, after an accident in Ferry road on December 24, 1948. Judgment was given the plaintiff company for the amount claimed.
