The Primate of New Zealand (Archbishop West-Watson) was congratulated yesterday bv the annual Synod of the Christchurch diocese on nis having attained on September 21 lhe fortieth anniversary of his consecration as a bishop. A special resolution offering the cordial congratulations of the Synod was moved bv lhe Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. A. K Warren), and seconded by Mr E. (.« Champion, representing the laity. The Mayor <Mr E. H. Andrews), who is president of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association, left yesterday for Queenstown, where he will attend the annual conference of the association. Crs. J. N. Clarke. W. P. Glue, and R G. Brown, the Town Clerk ’Mr H. S. Feast), who is treasurer of the association, and the secretary (Mr F. G. K. Gilchrist) will leave to-day. The president of the New Zealand Racing Conference ’Mr H. R. H. Chalmers) and Mrs Chalmers returned 1o Wellington in the Wanganella yesterday after a visit to England.— (P.A.) Mr E. G. Budge, of Wellington, has been appointed to the Wellington staff of the United States Education Foundation as an administrative assistant and accountant. — ’P.A.) The chief secretary of the Salvation Army in New Zealand for the last two years. Colonel George H Marshall, is to return to the United States at the end of next month. He is to become second in command of the Salvation Army’s United States West territory, with headquarters at San Francisco. The territory consists of 11 Western States. Alaska, the Hawaiian Islands, and the Philippines. Colonel Marshall said he was leaving New Zealand earlier than he would have wished, but the New Zealand climate did not suit Mrs Marshall’s health.— (P.A.) Dr. J. W. Kemp, who has been in charge of a hospital at Sarawak, returned to New Zealand in the Wanganella. which arrived at Wellington yesterday. He was born in New Zealand 34 years ago, but has been away for more than 25 years. Dr. Kemp and his wife and family of three intend to settle in New Zealand.—(P.A.)
