LOCAL GOVERNMENT COMMISSION
EXTENSION OF POWERS ADVOCATED (New Zealand Press Association./ WELLINGTON. Sept. 23. Extension of the powers of the Local Government Commission was sought by a deputation from the New Zealand Counties' Association, which approached the Prime Minister ‘Mr Fraser). The deputation asked that the commission's powers be widened so it could recommend, where it thought necessary, that catchment board work should be carried out by existing local bodies. The association was perturbed at the fact that the commission was only empowered to recommend that a catchment board should or should not be established in an area under investigation. the deputation said. The commission had stated it definitely did not have the power to recommend that work should be carried out by existing local bodies, even if it considered those bodies could do the work. The Minister of Finance (Mr Nash) and the Minister of Works ‘Mr R. Semple) who were present with Mr Fraser, told the deputation that they saw no objection to the proposed extension of the commission's powers.
