SWAYUP’S SMART PERFORMANCE
RACING
I ATTRACTIVE TRIAL FOR DUNEDIN GUINEAS 1 Swayup galloped into favour for the Dunedin Guineas when he won the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton on Saturday. The Sir Galloway colt showed marked superiority over his opponents over the seven furlongs, and he impressed as being capable of mastering the extra furlong of the Wingatui classic, which will be run next Saturday week. After running to the front on Saturday, Swayup was always galloping freely clear of the field, and he was not asked for his best inside the last furlong to win by three lengths and record the smart , time of Imin 25 l-ssec. I In his early races as a two-year-old he . showed brilliant speed, but lack of ability ito run on in his races. He improved as the season went bn and opened his winning record on the first day of the Ashburton Club’s autumn meeting on April 30, when he easily won the Trial Stakes, six furlongs, with 7-7. He beat a useful field of two and three-year-olds, including Terminus. Don’t Listen, Cloudy Range, Detention, and Fantasy. On the second day of the meeting he just as decisively won a two-year-old handicap with 8-12. He gave away up to 191 b in weight to some useful gallopers. He was then put aside, and reappeared at Carterton on September 10, when he won a division of a hack race with a lot in hand. He has now won over £lOOO. and has bright prospects of adding to that total within the next few weeks. A feature of Swayup’s lines is the prominence of the defunct Paper Money on both sides of his pedigree. Swayup is by Sir Galloway, a son of Paper Money, from Petacci. a Defaulter mare. Defaulter’s dam. Expense, was by Paper Money. Sir Galloway is an unraced horse from Green Cloth, by The Ace from Equipment (dam of Cricket Bat, Full Feather, and others), by Martian from To-morrow, by Bill of Portland, and tracing back to the imported mare Eleusis, ancestress of many good winners. Petacci’s dam, San Marino, was got by Gustavo from Ravenna, which left good winners in Alma (dam of Batal). Boloyna, Travenna. and Ventrac. Beaumaris Beaumaris, the most favoured of the Riccarton candidates, made the forward showing expected of him, but he could not match Swayup for brilliance over seven furlongs. It is doubtful whether the extra furlong of the Dunedin Guineas would be far enough for this quality Beau Repaire colt to turn the tables, but he looks a first-class staying prospect. He was always prominent on Saturday, and his position in second place was never endangered over the last furlong. Trinidad was not well placed in the early stages, but he ran on strongly for third, beating the win favourite. Western Winner, by a head. This Defaulter three-year-old has shown promise in his races and he should do good service for Doctors E. M. and R. S. J. Fitzgerald. Western Winner made a promising move near the half-mile and appeared likely to continue his run when he appeared wide out at the straight entrance. At the furlong, however, it could be seen that he had no chance of heading Beaumaris, not to mention Swayup. and he was cut cut of third place by Trinidad. Robinfaye made the best showing of the fillies, finishing fifth, a length behind Western Winner. Valid was one of the big disappointments nf the race. After his good effort over the same distance at the Grand National meeting he was expected to make a more forward showing than he did. He was well placed to the straight, but showed no dash in the run home and finished near the tail of the field. I > , , • ■ : i . ; ’ ; ’ i • (
