COAL STRIKE IN UNITED STATES

Thousands of Miners Stay Away DISPUTE ABOUT WELFARE FUND (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) NEW YORK. September 19. A strike which threatens to paralyse the United States coal industry began early to-day. Thousands of miners stayed away from the pits because the companies had suspended payments to the United Mine Workers’ Association's welfare and retirement fund. The strike is expected to be fully effective in Pennsylvania, and reports indicate that four other big coal-pro-ducing areas will be extensively affected. Miners voted for a strike at union meetings throughout the nation yesterday. Some branches did not take official action, but the miners are reported to have agreed among themselves to stop work until told otherwise by the president of their umon (Mr John L. Lewis). No strike call has been issued by Mr Lewis. The union has 480,000 members.
