WASHHOUSE DAMAGED BY FIRE

The interior and contents of a detached washhouse at 21 Collins street, owned bv Mr Edward David Clark, was severely damaged by fire last evening. A passer-by gave the alarm when the building was well alight, and the Christchurch Fire Brigade received a call at 7.53 p.m. The cause of the fire is not known. Slight damage was done to an exterior wall of a house at 22 Alexandra street, Richmond, occupied by Mr Robert Cyril Watson, when fire broke out in the roof last evening. The brigade was called at 7.26 p.m. Four other calls to fires were received by the brigade during the day. The . first call was at 1.16 p.m. to a fire in a car outside 188 Earbadoes street. Slight damage was done to woodwork under the bonnet. The car was owned by Mr John Stewart Priest, of 166 Hazeldean road. At 3.16 p.m. the brigade was called to a grass fire in a vacant section at 77 Medway street. One delivery of water was used to extinguish the outbreak. A chimney fire at the residence of Mr Frank McLoy Millar. 59 Grenville street, was put out at 6.43 p.m.
