UNIVERSITY COLLEGE SITE
Sir,—Though manj' approve the scheme to transfer the University College to Ham road, Riccarton, few seem to consider actual New Zealand conditions. It would not be far wrong to say that most of our graduates have been part-time students. A people’s university should provide adequate facilities for part-time students and for those who live in the outer suburbs and have to depend on public transport. Mr Schroder pleaded for the expansion of the present site of Canterbury College. It is close to the central lines of communication, libraries, museum, and playing fields. Its antiquated buildings need scrapping and rebuilding in modern style; but the site is ideal. Few cities have a better one. The up-to-date London University (20.000 students) was built from 1933 onward, on 11 acres in central London near the British Museum and the National Central Library, etc. A full university degree can be taken even by students able to attend only evening lectures.—Yours, etc., CHRISTINA K. GUY. Sumner, September 19, 1949.
