IDENTITY CARDS TO BE ISSUED

Policy ENFORCEMENT OF SEGREGATION

The Prime Minister of South Africa (Mr D. F. Malah) announced to-day that, “to protect the European race.” every South African citizen would have to carry an identity card classifying him as European, “native," coloured, or Indian. He told the Transvaal Congress Of the Nationalist Party that his party was determined to enforce apartheid (racial segregation). The Government was now resolved to abolish the direct vote of the coloured people in the Cape Province in the same way as it had abolished the representation of Indians in Parliament.

The Government was determined to Stop non-European students from mingling with European boys and girls at the Witwatersrand and Cape Town Universities where they enjoyed equality. Dr. Malan added. “Dr. Malan’s native segregation policy will push Africans and Indians into the Communist fold," says the London “News Chronicle.” “Dr. Malan has reaffirmed his determination to enforce , racial segregation rigorously, and at the same time to fight Communism in the Union. He seems utterly blind to the political paradox of his two proposals. Dr. Malan seems bent on creating ruin in South Africa, and calling it white supremacy.’’
