DEVELOPMENT OF HAREWOOD

ANNOUNCEMENT SOUGHT BY HARBOUR BOARD

The Lyttelton Harbour Board will request an immediate announcement from the Minister in charge of the Air Department (Mr F. Jones) as to when work will commence at Harewood to bring the airport up to international standard in time for Canterbury’s centennial. This was decided on the motion of Mr W. S. MacGibbon. at a meeting of the board yesterday. The board received a circular from the South Island Local Bodies’ Association. stating that the executive considered that the actual commencement of the work might be facilitated if all parties signified to the Minister concerned “just how seriously the matter was viewed.” “Unless careful vigilance is exorcised by South Islanders, this project might fall by the wayside as has happened in so many other cases in the past.” said the circular.
