HONESTY BOXES ON TRAMS
AUCKLAND COLLECTS MORE THAN £3O A WEEK (New Zealand Press Association.) AUCKLAND, September 6. Honesty boxes on the Auckland trams are bringing in more revenue. From a poor start in December, 1947, when the boxes on six trams averaged 2Ad a day, the takings in the boxes, now installed on 165 trams, have increased to between £3O and £35 a week.
The returns in the last three months have shown a sharp increase. While most of the coins are coppers, silver coins, mainly shillings and halfcrowns, go into the boxes. A few days ago five florins were collected from one box. Transport Board officials think this might be conscience money. Since the introduction of the honesty boxes the amount of conscience money posted 1o the Transport Board has fallen off sharply.
