SHOTS EXCHANGED ON BORDER

CZECH AND AMERICAN POLICE r ßec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, September 5. German border police reported today that United States Constabulary troops and Czechoslovak border police exchanged more than 600 pistol shots near Hof early yesterday, says the Frankfurt correspondent of the Associated Press. The American police said later that one of their armoured vehicles had been fired on from the Czech frontier on Friday night. The Americans had ignored the attack. Early yesterday morning a six-man American patrol had come under heavy fire, apparently from Czech border police. The Americans returned the fire, and radioed for help. When another American patrol arrived the attackers were forced to withdraw.
