RAILWAY ACCIDENTS

29 DEATHS; 481 INJURED LAST YEAR Twenty-nine persons were killed and 481 injured in accidents involving the Railways Department's vehicles in lhe year ended March 31, according to the annual report of the department. In actual train accidents during the year eight employees were injured, four in the North Island and four in the South Island. Five were killed and 75 injured in accidents on the line, other,than train accidents. There were six fatal shunting accidents, and 126 employees and eight other persons were injured during shunting operations. Three pedestrians and eight occupants of motor vehicles were killed in level-crossing accidents, and 37 injured. Under the heading “Trespassers” the department lists six persons killed and one injured, and in miscellaneous accidents 218 employees were injured, one other person was killed, and eight other persons were injured.
