MR F. T. EVANS
UNION’S TRIBUTE With the death of Mr Frank Evans Canterbury and New Zealand football had lost one of its stalwarts, said the president (Mr V. L. Jensen) at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. Mr Evans was one of the men who had helped to found Canterbury football, said Mr Jensen. He had played football in Canterbury toward the end of last century, had captained the province in 1893, been a selector of the 1905 AH Blacks, and later a president of the Canterbury Union and New Zealand Union. He had also been a referee without peer in New Zealand. Mr Evans was a life member of the union, and his name would be perpetuated by the Evans Shield, of which he was the donor, added Mr Jensen. Members of the committee observed a period of silence out of respect to Mr Evans.
