TRAINING OF FORCES
ARRANGEMENTS FOR STUDENTS The Canterbury University College Council yesterday passed a resolution assuring students and intending students that “every possible and reasonable provision would be made to ensure that their academic advancement is not detrimentally affected by nonattendance at the college during compulsory military training.” Mr J. G. Johnston said he moved the resolution because pome parents and students were concerned. Some form of exemption, postponed training, and concession marking might be introduced to meet the situation. Personally he opposed any total exemption from service, because the forces needed the intelligent .men who could be found in the university. The situation might best be met by concession marks as allowed returned servicemen immediately after the war. Mr R. M. Macfarlane seconded the motion. The rector (Dr. H. R. Hulme) said that the University Senate had recently discussed the matter in. committee with the Chiefs of Staff. Reasonable assurances had been given and the matter had been left to the Senate executive. “I make it clear that we are not seeking privileges for students,” Dr. Hulme said. Adjustments would, however, be necessary. Mr W. T. Langley said he hoped that military service in the long vacation ■ would avoid any interruption of college work. 1
