TEACHER TRAINING

SITTING OF CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE The Consultative Committee on Teacher Training set up by the Minister of Education (Mr T. H. McCombs) to inquire into the provision made for the recruitment, education and training of teachers in New Zealand began its sittings in Christchurch yesterday. The committee will also inquire into the selection of candidates for training and the conditions of admission, the courses of training, the organisation and control of the training of teachers, the types of certificate that may be awarded and the prescriptions for the present departmental examinations for teachers’ certificate and will consider the implications of the proposal to extend by one year the course for training for primary school teachers. Recommendations will be made after the committee has concluded the hearing of evidence.

The committee consists of Mr A. E. Campbell, director of the New Zealand Council for Educational Research (chairman). Miss Ruth Wix (Wellington), Mr D. G. Ball, chief inspector of primary schools, Dr. H. E. Field, professor of education at Canterbury University College, Mr F. C. Lopdfll, Superintendent of Education (Auckland), Mr Duncan Mackay, principal of the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College, Dr. J. H. Murdoch, Auckland Teachers’ Training College, and Mr R. G. Ridling, principal of the Wellington Teachers’ Training College. Mr A. N. B. McAlooh, Wellington College, is secretary. Yesterday the committee heard evidence from the Christchurch branch of the New Education Fellowship, the New Zealand Speech Therapists’ Association,. Mr L. A. Hayward (Yaldkurst Model School). Mr B. C. Penney (New Zealand Educational Institute), the Canterbury University College Professorial Board, the New Zealand Education Board Agricultural Instructors’ Association, the staff of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, and primary school inspectors.
