BRITAIN’S JET FIGHTERS

FAILURE REPORTED IN MANOEUVRES ATTACKS BY OBSOLETE U.S. BOMBERS (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 20. “A secret report on the failure of, Britain’s jet fighters against American 829 bombers in the jointair manoeuvres over the British Isles earlier this summer is in the hands of. the United States Air Force,” says the “New York Herald Tribune.” “Enough of the report has leaked out to indicate that for all practical purposes Britain’s latest type of jets failed completely when Superfortresses came in at an altitude of 35,000 feet to test the defences. “American and - British correspondents who rode in the Fortresses during the operation reported that the ers experienced only feeble and sluggish attacks at 35,000 feet and that the jets were barely able to exceed the bombers’ speed in straight pursuit. “According to these reports fhe B29’s had to conduct their attacks on British objectives well below 30,000 feet to keep the exercises from being a complete bust.”
